[Trailer], let me know what do you think about?
老溜号#371,谢谢化石介绍《Crooked Beauty》。Based on what is shown in the Trailer, I would say that, photographically, it is certainly an interest film. I will not comment on the content except that Ken presents the story with a voice rather than the usual actions。This is something very intriguing to me, say the least. From photographic point of view, I think he has been extremely creative to use a large quantity of black-white images, very little colour. My understanding is that in order to achieve what he intended he needs to use contrast and motion to visually present the story, ie, contrasting light and shadow in the still images, using flying clouds, flowing water reflections and flashes to create the flickering light in the motion pictures. Together with the music, he created a mood which may represent the story-teller, and at the same time to condition the audiences’ perception too. It may not be everyone’s a cup of tea for everyday, but his creativity and taste are fully reflected by the film.
From an audience’s perspective, one may notice the shadow, while others may notice the light. I felt strongly about the coupling and contrasting the two. You would not fully get the effects if you take one away from the other.
Overall, the film is inspirational for using black-white images to present thoughts (still) and thinking (motion). In this sense, the visual presentation is much purer and more straightforward, and will be memorised more clearly by the audiences as the feature of the film. Colour and action, in this case, may be too ‘distractive’.
A few words on his personal life as you mentioned, it is a pity that his girl has left him on his success, but that what fame, sometime, does to people, doesn’t it? On the other hand, the girl is very brave and independent. I wish her the best of luck in her pursuing. In my case, I prefer to think that the light and shadow as a couple, one is the mirror of the other. Without light, no shadow; without shadow, light will not appear bright.
