Thread Hijacking

2011-07-27

I am only pointing this out as some people may 'take the hump' if any of us does it to them by mistake and I would not like that to happen to anyone in the WeiWang!

It is a generally accepted rule in an open on-line forum that posting one’s own topic on a thread that has been opened by someone else is bad manners and called 'Thread Hijacking'. It would be different if you had posted a message that was directly relevant to a point you were trying to make about the original thread by way of constructive criticism or discussion. Most of 'Thread Hijacking' happens by mistake. One is usually able to realise after it being pointed out. It is then normally followed by an apology, and move to a different time and place to open a separated thread.

'Thread hijacking' also includes the behaviour that taking over a thread on a message board by taking a part of the original posted topic, twisting it around and ‘hijacking’ the thread itself. What happens is that the original content contained in the post becomes moot and whatever the ‘Thread hijacker’ has manipulated the content to become the new content thereby ‘hijacking’ the original intent of post. People will then respond to the ‘hijacker's’ input which has become the focus of the thread.

Even worse, in someone else’s blog with a specific topic, a ‘thread hijacker’ posts multiple messages which are self-centred comments and irrelevant to the blog’s topic, even using different ids. Subsequently, the entire discussion in the blog breaks off the original track. In this case, the hijacker does not only shift the topic, but steals the blog-owner’s participants/audiences as well. The consequences of hijacking someone else’s blog are destroying the blog’s original content but serving the hijacker’s own selfish purpose.

Thank you for reading.
